Maldini Hurt By Arsenal Defeat

Milan captain Paolo Maldini admitted that it hurt to see his European career end in such a way, but he conceded that Arsenal thoroughly deserved to knock them out of the Champions League.

The European Champions were dethroned last night as Arsenal produced a dominant performance to win 2-0 at San Siro, and thus progress to the quarter finals of the competition.

The game proved to be Maldini’s last-ever game in Europe, as he will finally hang up his boots at the end of the season after a glittering career spanning almost a quarter-of-a-century.

The 39-year-old had hoped to end his career on a high by lifting the Champions League in Moscow in May but this dream has now been dashed.

"We must accept this defeat. Analyzing the two games, we can see they were better than us,” an honest Maldini conceded.

“We created too few chances to bring home the qualification.

"I'm very sorry, it hurts, but we have to accept it."

Maldini was also asked if Coach Carlo Ancelotti should stay at the club next season, given Milan’s disappointing campaign.

"I believe so, I do not see why we should change. He has proven to be one of the best coaches in Europe, winning almost everything,” the legend explained.

"You cannot talk of a farewell, sometimes we must also accept defeat."
