Legend Maldini To Receive Award

Milan captain Paolo Maldini will be awarded the third Giacinto Facchetti prize next Monday at a ceremony in Italy.

The award, which is named after one of Inter's all-time greats who passed away in September 2006, is bestowed on a player who encapsulates the spirit of football.

Facchetti was a world-class defender who was captain of Inter Milan and Italy in the pre-Dino Zoff era. The late Facchetti was honoured in 2006 with an award bearing his name, which would be given out annually to a deserving international recipient.

The first winner was former Vicenza player Julio Gonzalez, who continued his playing career despite losing an arm in a car crash. Last year, Iraq captain Younes Mahmoud Khalef won the award after leading his side to Asian Cup glory.

Maldini is in the final season of an incredible career spent entirely in the service of the Rossoneri and will now see more silverware coming his way.

The 40-year-old ambassador for UNICEF will be presented with the bronze sculpture on October 27 and a donation of 10 000 euros will be made to a charity of Maldini's choice.
