Italy Will Honour Maldini - President Abate

The president of the Italian FA, Giancarlco Abete has backed the idea of a special farewell to the national side for Milan legend Paolo Maldini...

Goal.com has been running a campaign to give Paolo Maldini a proper send off from the international football arena, to allow him to play for his country one last time, and today, that dream moved one step closer to reality, when FIGC president Giancarlo Abete lent his support to the idea.

Datasport reports that the Italian football supremo declared, “Maldini is the only Italian, along with Dino Zoff, to receive a special award from FIFA, and I believe we should do what we can to show our gratitude for everything he has done, but we must wait till he finishes playing.”

At this stage, it is supposed that what will take place will be something similar to what was set up for Roberto Baggio's Azzurri swansong.

On April 28, 2004, the 'Divine Ponytail' played a testimonial game against Spain; it was a match that is remembered to this day for its high levels of emotion on all sides.

Paolo Maldini remains the most capped Italian international in history, with 126 games under his belt, and despite Fabio Cannavaro looking like he will beat that record, the Neapolitan is only four caps behind in second place, there are millions who would love to see Paolo get cap number 127.
