Werder Bremen Clash Worthy Of Champions League - Milan Legend Maldini

Milan captain Paolo Maldini feels the UEFA Cup tie against Werder Bremen has all the prestige of a Champions League clash.

Tomorrow night Milan will look to put the derby defeat against Inter behind them as they resume their UEFA Cup campaign against Werder Bremen.

The Rossoneri face the German side at the Weserstadion in the first leg of this last 32 tie. According to captain Paolo Maldini, this is a match worthy of being played in the Champions League.

"It's a match that's played in the UEFA Cup, but it's absolutely worthy of being played in the Champions League, considering the prestige and strength of the two teams," he told bundesliga.de.

The two clubs have met before in the Champions League, in 1989 and 1994 during the Rossoneri's glory years, and Maldini looked back on those clashes.

"A lot of time has passed since the first Werder-Milan of 1989, but I still remember that my current coach Carlo Ancelotti was my team-mate at the time," he said.

"I managed to score against Werder five years later, in 1994, also in the Champions League but at San Siro."

The 40-year-old has confirmed this will be his last season as a player. He has scored a total of 32 goals in all competitions for the Rossoneri over the past 23 years.
