Shameful Scenes At San Siro, But We Will Honour Maldini - Abete

The Italian football chief is not impressed by the Maldini fiasco as he promises a friendly farewell for the Italian...

Italian FA (FIGC) president Giancarlo Abete admits there will be plans for a Paolo Maldini farewell Italy match as he condemns the fans who insulted the Milan defender after the game against Roma on Sunday.

The Curva Sud of the San Siro put up an insulting banner which made what should have been a sweet farewell to the San Siro turn sour. Abete believes the fans who showed Maldini no respect should be ashamed of themselves as he passes his judgement on the fiasco.

"It's a shameful thing because Maldini deserves respect for what he is and has been," Abete told La Repubblica.

"It's something which has no logic or understanding. Anyway, we are planning to honour him with a friendly match."

Maldini was visibly disappointed with some of the fans' reactions after his last ever appearance at the San Siro in a Milan shirt, and he left the stadium without saying much to the media.
